Wood Screw

Wood Screw

Consumers Buying Tips – Screws

In general, your typical home repair task will likely need wood-screws. Most wood-screws are composed of steel, but if corrosion is a risk with the repair that you are making, it would be better to use nickel, copper, brass, or bronze. For home improvement projects that involve attaching anything to masonry or wood framing, consider using lag-screws. Lag-screws paired with lead expansion anchors are suitable for big projects that need a great deal of holding power. These are great for wood-to-metal fastening, as well.

If you are using metal components in your project, you will need to pick up some metal-screws to add to your DIY tools. When this type of screw is driven into metal, it forms treads, cutting into the pilot hole to make it easier to drive them in. Sheet metal-screws come in several varieties that are meant for different types and weights of metal. For lighter sheet metals, pointed panhead-screws are appropriate. If you are undertaking a project that requires heavier metal sheets, blunt panhead-screws will work better.

You can also attach metal parts to each other with machine-screws, which are typically made of steel or brass. To keep rust from starting and damaging the metal as well as the screw, machine-screws have a coating of zinc, copper, cadmium, brass, or nickel. Machine-screws are available with a variety of heads – flat head, Round Head, oval head, and fillister head. For a project that is extremely heavy duty, round head screws are ideal because they are suitable for working with thick sheet metal and can be used on soft and hard metals alike.

When choosing a variety of screw, consider the thickness of any materials that you will be working with. Approximately two-thirds of the screw length should extend into the second piece of material, but it should not go all the way through the other side. If you are putting up sheet rock or wallboard, you will need a type of long screw that made just for wallboard. Particle board requires special screws that have wide, sharp threads, as well. For a repair or assembly that you anticipate to be permanent, you might think about using a one-way screw. These secure things permanently and are extremely difficult to remove.

For fibreglass projects, always use a washer with every screw – the fragility of the material might be a problem otherwise. If you have a table to repair or build, dowel-screws can be used to attach table legs directly into the bottom of a table without driving a screw through the top and ruining its appearance because they are threaded on both ends.
